Ashleigh Barty’s Australian Open is over, with the wildcard falling at the hands of German veteran Mona Barthel in the third round.
Barty put in a spirited display at a packed Rod Laver Arena over two hours on Friday night but lost 6-4 3-6 6-3 to the qualifier.
The Queenslander, resuming her grand-slam career after a dalliance with cricket, had already produced her best performance at a major by reaching the last 32 and with a surge in the rankings to come.
