Newly crowned Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli and world No.8 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will represent France at the 2014 Hopman Cup in major coup for the Perth tournament.
The duo are the the first team to be announced for the event to be held at Perth Arena from December 29 – January 4.
Tsonga, a four-time grand slam semi-finalist, has again chosen Perth to kick off his season after competing with Mathilde Johansson in the 2013 competition.
“I’m just really happy to go back and hope I will have some fun like last year,” said Tsonga, who is coached by Australian Roger Rasheed.
“It’s the best preparation because it’s the same court as the Australian Open. It’s always really hot there.
“I think it’s just unbelievable. I remember last year outside was 40 degrees and inside it was just perfect to play tennis.”
The popular Frenchman has maintained a top 10 ranking for four of the past five years and currently holds ten ATP singles titles. He captured his latest in Marseille, France in February and went on to reach the semi-finals of his home grand slam, the French Open, in May.
Tsonga will pair with the in-form world No.7 Bartoli, hot off her title run at Wimbledon this month.
“It’s great to play with Jo, obviously. He’s an awesome player. We have known each other for so many years. I’m sure it’s going to be a lot of fun,” Bartoli said.
The 28-year-old blitzed the field at the All England Club less than a fortnight ago, defeating seven opponents without losing a set, to win her first grand slam title and the sport’s most prestigious trophy.
This will be Bartoli’s second appearance at the Hopman Cup after she reached the final of the 2012 competition with partner Richard Gasquet before falling short to Czech pair Petra Kvitova and Tomas Berdych.
