Aussie Thompson beats Khachanov in Miami

Australian Jordan Thompson has upset Russian prodigy Karen Khachanov 6-2 6-3 to qualify for the Miami Open third round.

Thompson proved too consistent for the world No.12 Khachanov on Saturday, hitting six aces and dominating the Russian’s second-serve points.

The 24-year-old Thompson, currently ranked 77th in the world, turned professional in 2013 but has only taken part in seven ATP Tour events.

Knocked out in the second round of the Australian Open this year, the Sydneysider has since made the quarter-finals at the New York Open – losing to American John Isner – and the second round at Indian Wells.

He’ll face Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in the third round, with a possible fourth-round clash against returning South African Kevin Anderson.

After more than two months away from the court with an elbow injury, world No.7 Anderson outlasted young Spaniard Jaume Munar 6-4 3-6 6-3.

“To get through in three sets, it felt really good to be back out there. I’m happy with how the elbow responded,” Anderson said.

Swiss superstar Roger Federer, meanwhile, required three sets to defeat Moldovan Radu Albot 4-6 7-5 6-3 in a little more than two hours.

He will next face world No.103 Filip Krajinovic on Monday after the Serbian upset Federer’s compatriot Stan Wawrinka 7-5 2-6 6-7(5-7).

Federer, who has won the Miami Open three times, had lost in the first round of last year’s event to Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis.

In other early action, Belgian David Goffin defeated Spaniard Pablo Andujar 6-4 6-1, while prodigious Canadian 20th seed Denis Shapovalov came from a set down to beat Britain’s Dan Evans 4-6 6-1 6-3.

Andrey Rublev, Daniil Medvedev and Joao Sousa also won through.
