Aussie Saville continues Open junior run

Australia’s junior world No.1 Luke Saville is through to the third round of the Australian Open boys’ singles.

Saville, the reigning junior Wimbledon champion, ousted unseeded Frenchman Lucas Pouille 6-3 3-6 6-4 on Tuesday to move into the last 16.

Saville is seeking to become Australia’s third champion at Melbourne Park in six years, with Brydan Klein and Bernard Tomic having won the boys’ event in 2007 and 2008 respectively.

Australia’s sixth seed, Andrew Harris, is also through, after a 6-4 6-2 second-round win over South Africa’s Wayne Montgomery.

They are the only two Australians left in the boys’ event, after 13th seed Nick Kyrgios and wildcard entrants Jack Schipanski, Bradley Mousley and Christopher O’Connell all lost their second-round matches on Tuesday.

Schipanski’s straight-sets exit to unseeded Canadian Filip Peliwo came after the Australian upset second-seeded Brazilian Thiago Monteiro in the opening round.

In the girls’ singles, Australia’s Storm Sanders, a wildcard entrant, reached the third round with a 6-3 6-4 victory over American qualifier Julia Elbaba.

Sanders is the only Australian girl left, after fellow wildcard recipient Georgiana Ruhrig was ousted in straight sets.

Sanders will take on Russian No.1 seed Irina Khromacheva in the third round.
