Aussie Cabrera into China tennis quarters

Young Australian Lizette Cabrera has advanced to the quarter-finals of the Guangzhou international tennis tournament.

The 19-year-old has impressed with a 6-0 7-5 win over third-seeded Anett Kontaveit of Estonia.

In the last eight, Cabrera will face Russian Evgeniya Rodina, who had defeated fellow Australian Arina Rodionova earlier in the tournament.

In May, Cabrera reached a career-high WTA singles ranking of 172 in the world.

In other second-round results on Wednesday, Rodina thrashed local hope Wang Yafan 6-1 6-2, while Chinese second seed Zhang Shuai completed a bagel over hapless Ipek Soylu of Turkey 6-0 6-0.

Ukraine’s Kateryna Kozlova finished with the same scoreline over China’s Han Xinyun, Aleksandra Krunic of Serbia downed German veteran Mona Barthel 6-4 6-0 and Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson belted Zhang Kailin of China 6-3 6-0.
