Auckland Classic loses another two seeds

The seeds continue to tumble at the Auckland Classic tennis tournament, with German Julia Goerges and Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan both departing in the second round.

Goerges, the No.2 seed and world No.18, was upset by Swede Johanna Larsson 7-5 6-7 (1-7) 6-3 in a match that went more than 2-1/2-hours on Wednesday.

Larsson, who is ranked 73rd, will face another seeded German in Mona Barthel in the quarter-finals.

Barthel beat Greek wildcard Eleni Daniilidou, a two-time Auckland champion, 7-6 (8-6) 6-2, to book her spot.

Sixth seed Shvedova went down to Russian Elena Vesnina 6-2 6-3.

An Auckland finalist in 2009 when she lost to compatriot and tournament favourite Elena Dementieva, Vesnina says she went into the match concerned about Shvedova’s big serve.

“It was very important to return well and deep in key moments,” she said.

“That was what I was trying to do and it helped me.”

Apart from Barthel, just two other seeds remain alive.

Belgian third seed Yanina Wickmayer went through to the last eight with a 6-3 6-0 win over Swiss Romina Oprandi.

Top seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska will contest her second-round match against Romania’s Simona Halep on Wednesday night.
