Ash Barty will look to become the first Australian woman in 41 years to win the Wimbledon crown, facing Czech Karolina Pliskova in the Final.
There was plenty of doubt surrounding Barty entering the major off the back of her hip injury which forced her to withdraw from the French Open, but across the last fortnight she’s certainly proved that’s not an issue.
Pliskova on the other hand entered Wimbledon dropping both of her lead-up matches, and in doing so dropped out of the top-ten for the first time in five years. The Czech had a tough start but as the draw opened up her run got easier until the Semis where she produced a monumental win over Sabalenka.
These two have met on seven occasions across their career with Barty leading 5-2, but they’ve all been incredibly close matches. Six of the seven have gone over the 21.5 total games, including their last two matches going to three sets – Barty winning their last three encounters.
Both Barty and Pliskova’s Semi Finals went over the 21.5 total games line, and the way both players are serving at the moment there’s no doubt we’ll see one of these sets go to 7.
These two are both great grass players in their own right. Barty’s court craft enables her to completely change the momentum of a point with her slice and volley game while Pliskova uses her big serve and powerful ground strokes to dominate her opponents.
But if anyone is equipped for the game of Pliskova, it’s Barty. The Aussie’s versatility and craft should be too much for the Czech but don’t expect a regulation straight sets win here. I like the chances of the total games eclipsing 21.5 and think Barty takes the trophy in three sets.
