American women on the march at US Open

Roared on by a raucous crowd as the rain tapped on the closed roof of Arthur Ashe Stadium, Madison Keys claimed a 2-6 6-4 6-1 win over Russian Elena Vesnina in the early hours of Sunday to lead a band of five American women into the US Open fourth round.

In a match that ended at 1.46am local New York time, the 15th-seeded American recovered from a woeful start to down 17th seed Vesnina and set up a meeting with Elina Svitolina.

Svitolina scored a 6-4 7-5 triumph over local favourite Shelby Rogers, who ended Australia’s hopes when she outlasted Daria Gavrilova in a marathon three-setter.

However, there will still be plenty to shout about for the Stars ‘N Stripes fans with five Americans in the women’s last 16. Ninth seed Venus Williams, Sloane Stephens, Jennifer Brady and 20th seed CoCo Vandeweghe are also through.

Brady battled to a 6-3 4-6 7-6 (7-3) defeat of Monica Niculescu, while Vandeweghe beat 10th seed Agnieszka Radwanska 7-5 4-6 6-4.

Keys shrieked a lengthy “‘Come on!” when Vesnina buried a shot into the net on the second match point.

“You guys were amazing, I definitely did not show up very well for the first set but you helped me get back into the match, thank you for helping me through that one,” Keys told the crowd.

“I think I finally settled in after being a bit over-amped at the start. Who doesn’t love a late show?”

Earlier French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko crashed out, losing in the third round 6-3 6-2 to Russian Daria Kasaktina after hitting 38 unforced errors.

The Latvian 12th seed got off to a fast start but the unseeded Kasaktina mixed her game with sliced backhands and chopped forehands to slow her opponent down.

Karolina Pliskova showed the steel of a world No.1 as she fought off a match point to claim a riveting 3-6 7-5 6-4 comeback win over Zhang Shuai.

Pliskova, runner-up to Serena Williams at Flushing Meadows last year, would have lost her top world ranking had she been beaten on Arthur Ashe Stadium but instead moved another step closer to a first career grand slam title.

“Last grand slam of the season and knowing you played fine last year, you just want to play that good again,” Pliskova said.
