Wolverhampton Wanderers have started seeking a replacement for sacked manager Mick McCarthy – with his successor having just 13 games to keep them in the Barclays Premier League.
The likes of Alan Curbishley – an early favourite with some bookmakers – Steve Bruce and Neil Warnock will inevitably be linked as possible candidates.
Former West Ham and Charlton boss Curbishley has been out of management in recent years but Bruce and Warnock are available after parting company with Sunderland and QPR this season.
Morgan will be hoping whoever takes charge can mirror the achievements of Roy Hodgson, who was appointed by West Brom 12 months ago – also with 13 games to go – in succession to Roberto Di Matteo.
After a watching brief against West Ham, the Baggies lost only two of their final 12 games to survive and it is that sort of form that will be needed to keep Wolves in the top flight.
Morgan ended former Republic of Ireland international McCarthy’s reign with the 5-1 home hammering by West Brom on Sunday the final straw.
Some fans vented their anger towards the directors box during the game and a couple of hundred demonstrated outside the ground long after the final whistle.
But former Wolves boss Graham Taylor believes the players have to take responsibility after their dreadful performance against the Baggies.
He told Sky Sports News: “There has to be some leadership in that dressing room now.
“I’m talking about every player. There was a real lack of leadership on the pitch against West Brom. The players have to look at themselves.
“Their Premier League futures are at risk and, irrespective of form and style, they have to get back to winning ways.”
Taylor also understands Morgan’s thinking in dispensing of McCarthy, 53, in hoping a new face in the dressing room will spark an upturn in fortunes.
He said: “A new manager can sometimes have an effect on the players for a short period of time.
“Maybe that is behind Steve Morgan’s thinking, hoping someone new will get a reaction to help the club stay in the Premier League.”
Morgan has just under a fortnight to find a replacement as Wolves are not in FA Cup action this weekend after their third round exit against Birmingham.
Wolves managed to stay out of the bottom three despite a poor sequence of results until the home setback by Aston Villa in mid-January.
The win at QPR 10 days ago ended a run of 11 games without a win in all competitions.
But it was only a temporary reprieve before Wolves were put to the sword by West Brom and suffered a fourth successive home setback to seal McCarthy’s fate.
