While Western United might have missed out on a top-two finish, they have received the best case alternative with the third seed in the finals and a pretty favourable first match.
John Aloisi’s men recorded back to back wins over Sydney FC and Auckland in their final two fixtures to lock up that seed and in the process, showed a marked improvement in performances.
If any team playing this weekend is going to go all the way it’s Western United and they will have the chance to further boost their confidence this weekend.
Adelaide’s season has been a tale of two halves, with a strong start coming undone in spectacular fashion over the last three months.
Since their 2-2 draw with Auckland on January 22, they have won twice, drawn four and lost seven, hardly the form of a team that is going to make noise at the pointy end of the campaign.
Their biggest issue has been a porous defence that conceded 55 goals, the second worst tally in the league behind wooden spooners Perth.
To win this game the Reds will need to find a way to score a lot of goals, something that seems unlikely with golden boot winner Archie Goodwin missing through injury.
This seems like a mismatch and taking Western United with a handicap does look appealing, but the price on the win in 90 minutes is good enough here.
