The Socceroos’ one all draw with South Africa on Monday night hasn’t exactly instilled punters with confidence about Australia’s prospects in Brazil.
Online bookie Sportingbet.com.au can report a large quantity of significant bets placed against the Socceroos succeeding at next month’s World Cup since the final whistle was blown on their warm-up match with the Bafana Bafana.
“First thing Tuesday one punter had $8k on Australia not to qualify and another $1500 on them to finish at the bottom of their group,” Sportingbet’s Andrew Brown said.
“There’s also been a spike in interest for them not to win a game at the tournament with those odds shortening from $1.28 to $1.25,” Brown said.
There is some good news for Socceroos fans, with Australia still long odds-on favourites to score at least one goal during the tournament.
Tim Cahill is the $3.20 favourite at Sportingbet to score the most goals, with Josh Kennedy ($7) and Matthew Leckie ($8) also in the market.
