Odds are against Socceroos after World Cup 2013 draw

After drawing World Champions Spain, The Netherlands and local hopes Chile, the Socceroos are long odds-on favourites not to qualify for the knockout stage at next year’s World Cup in Brazil.

Sportingbet has installed the Socceroos at odds of $1.09 not to qualify from their group. The Socceroos are $7 to qualify and $26 outsiders to win their group.

Australia’s best hopes of a victory will be against Chile, where they are $5.50 outsiders. Australia is at $8 with Sportingbet to beat The Netherlands and $9.50 to beat Spain.

“It’s a horror draw for Australia and the odds are now firmly stacked against the Socceroos to record any wins in Brazil,” Sportingbet’s Andrew Brown said.

Australia’s odds of winning the World Cup drifted from $201 to $301 at Sportingbet. Sportingbet’s UK parent company, William Hill, has been even tougher on the Aussies, putting the side up at odds of 1000/1 to win the World Cup.

“We have to show a bit more faith in our national team and who knows, maybe they can do a Bradbury,” Brown said.
