Lukaku studies DVDs to be tops in box

Romelu Lukaku admits he spends Saturday evenings studying DVDs of his performances with West Brom to help him achieve his goal of becoming a leading striker.

Lukaku is on a season-long loan from Chelsea and notched his 11th and 12th Barclays Premier League goals of the season during Saturday’s 2-1 home win over Sunderland.

But there is no question of the 19-year-old, signed by the Blues for 18 million from Anderlecht two years ago, becoming carried away with his success.

He has clear visions to eventually become a star player for Chelsea and picks up a copy of every game from Albion’s technical staff so he can work on his strengths and weaknesses.

Lukaku said: “You have to be focused. I’m not wasting my time with my career right now. I’m 19 but I know what I want and I know what I want to realise in the future.

“What can I improve on? Everything. I just want to be as complete as any player wants to be. I don’t think now I can say ‘this is good’.

“My heading, my defensive part of the game, my skill rate, everything I work on. You can never say something is perfect. I think Cristiano Ronaldo never says something is perfect. He works on everything.”

Lukaku added: “I watch my games every day. After games I will go home and watch the game again and see what I did wrong, what I did well and improve on it for the next game.

“I take a full copy of every game home on DVD. It’s normal if you want to be at that top level.

“You have to know your game, you have to know the details of your team-mates and what you are doing on the pitch.”

Lukaku is relishing playing on a regular basis which never happened during his first season at Stamford Bridge.

He said: “When I arrived at Chelsea, I had a great relationship with everyone but I just wasn’t playing that much.

“At the end it was very difficult for me because I didn’t think it would be like that.

“But we talked about it and, when I arrived at West Brom it was a case of ‘okay, this is a new start, let me show my qualities and let me just stay humble.'”

Lukaku is in regular contact with his parent club and is unsure whether he will return in the summer or spend a second season out on loan.

But he is also keen to help the Baggies secure a European spot.

Lukaku said: “I don’t know what they will decide. We will have a chat about how to build up a good career for me at Chelsea.

“Every 10 days I have a meeting with them and sometimes they just come and talk with me and say what I have to improve, that if I come back there I have to be like this or like that etc.

“There are a lot of clever people over there and they are seeing that I am playing in a good way.

“Let me just play week after week and we will see how things go because you cannot talk about next season at this moment. We are just in February and there are 11 games to go.

“Now the big players in the league, the likes of Tevez, Van Persie, Rooney and Lampard, they will step their game up.

“I just want to be a part of them. If I can do it now at this young age, let me step my game up and take West Brom into Europe.”
