Lucky day for Chiefs in South Africa

Kaizer Chiefs scored twice inside three minutes during the second half to seal a 3-0 victory over Cape Town All Stars Saturday and secure a last-16 place in the South African FA Cup.

Substitutes Lucky Khune and Lehlohonolo Majoro scored the goals within minutes of coming on at Soccer City in Soweto after Lucky Baloyi had put the home team ahead before half-time.

Premiership clubs Jomo Cosmos and Lamontville Golden Arrows also advanced with contrasting first round victories and were joined by first division outfit Witbank Spurs.

Chiefs were wary of third-tier All Stars having made several humiliating exits against lower league opposition in recent seasons and coach Vladimir Vermezovic was relieved by the comfortable victory.

“This match represented a tough psychological challenge for my team given our record in the past few seasons against teams from lower divisions,” the Serb admitted.

“I gave some fringe players an opportunity to impress tonight and I am satisfied with parts of our performance,” said the boss chasing a league and cup double.

Baloyi volleyed Chiefs ahead midway through the opening half, Khune scored with a flying header after 69 minutes and Majoro punished a careless clearance by goalkeeper Wesley Fransman to complete the scoring.

Cosmos put aside their struggle to avoid relegation and came from behind to win 2-1 at first division African Warriors with Siyabonga Nhlapo snatching the stoppage-time winner.

Collins Mbesuma, a member of the Zambia 2012 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad, scored twice for Arrows in a 5-0 rout of North West Shining Stars while Spurs edged Mpumalanga Black Aces on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
