Kosmina says A-League not over for Reds

Despite Adelaide United’s A-League season being shot, coach John Kosmina is refusing to be distracted by his club’s looming Asian adventure.

The ninth-placed Reds host Perth Glory on Thursday night before departing for Uzbekistan and an Asian Champions League (ACL) fixture next Tuesday.

Kosmina says United want to salvage something from their horror A-League season, which has returned just five wins amid the worst scoring and defensive record in the competition.

“The A-League is not gone,” Kosmina said on Wednesday.

“We want to win games – there are four games left to win and we have got to try and win them.

“It’s important that we do win games.

“We need to win a game at home, we need to win it for the supporters, we need to win it for the owners, we need to win it for the players, for ourselves.”

Kosmina recalled defender Daniel Mullen and Antony Golec after their Olyroos duties for a fixture which marks striker Sergio van Dijk’s 100th A-League appearance.

“He has been a fantastic acquisition for Australian football, his goal-scoring record speaks for itself,” Kosmina said of his attacking frontman.

The Reds will confront their former captain Travis Dodd, returning to Hindmarsh Stadium as a Perth player.

“Travis plays for Perth now so he’s an opponent,” Kosmina said.

“We have got to be aware of the good things and the qualities he has got – his pace, his experience and the fact he might be trying to prove a point because he hasn’t played against us yet.”

Kosmina said a key factor would be eliminating mistakes.

“A lot of times you get away with mistakes, but we make one mistake and we get punished for it,” he said.

“Maybe that is just the space we’re in at the moment.

“You make your own luck so maybe we need a little bit more good intention … go out and have a serious go from right down deep inside, not just a pretend go, and you might get something out of it.”
