Blackburn boss Steve Kean is convinced his side will avoid relegation this season despite Rovers slipping back into the drop zone.

Two successive defeats have seen Blackburn dragged back into the fight against the drop and now Kean takes his side to West Brom on Saturday before a home match against misfiring Liverpool on Tuesday.

The Rovers boss is looking for a repeat of last season’s results, which both ended 3-1 to Blackburn – which would go along way to ensuring top-flight football next season.

Kean insists the atmosphere at the club is vibrant, saying: “I’m very confident. We are not edgy, we feel as though we are in control and have enough quality.

“We are training at a very high level and it is a positive atmosphere, it is not a negative one at all.

“We are convinced we have got the players and the fixtures ahead of us that we can get ourselves out of this position we are in.

“It is never nice when you slip down a couple of places but we have to focus the players on what was good in the games, and there was plenty of encouragement to take from the Manchester United game.”

Kean enjoyed his first win as Blackburn manager against West Brom last season but he does not envisage an easy ride despite Roy Hodgson’s men being virtually assured of staying up.

He added: “We have happy memories of the Hawthorns – we won there last season and beat Liverpool at home, and there is no reason why we can’t do that again.

“I am sure West Brom will want to finish as high as possible and Roy will not be wanting them to take their foot off the pedal, so I don’t foresee them taking it easy.”

Liverpool have serious problems of their own to contend with after a shocking run of results in the Premier League and Kean is hoping that the Reds’ focus will be on the FA Cup semi-final the following weekend.

He added: “They will have an eye on the FA Cup – us playing them now is a good time and it will be difficult for them not to think about the semi-final, so we will try to use that to our advantage.”

Kean has also been buoyed by having a full squad to choose from after French defender Gael Givet returned from a hamstring strain.
