Jones too great an obstacle for Chelsea

Australian keeper Brad Jones has retained his place in the Liverpool net to help the English Premiership League side to a 1-1 draw against competition powerhouse Chelsea.

Jones played his sixth successive match on Sunday wearing the No.1 as regular keeper Pepe Reina continued to recover from injury.

While conceding one goal, the Australian proved an unwanted obstacle for Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo.

“We controlled the game and had chances for a second goal and that is probably a disappointment … we needed to score a second one,” the boss told reporters after the match.

“He (Jones) made some very good saves and also some misses from us.”

A John Terry shot from a corner in the 20th minute was too good for Jones but the quick hands from Down Under stopped a further two blasts from Chelsea until Luis Suarez equalised midway through the second half.

The draw prevented Chelsea from moving back to second place in the competition, while Liverpool remain in 13th.

While some British media outlets report Reina is already fit to play, former Liverpool defender Steven Nicol said the club has made the right decision to stick with Jones.

“I think he deserves to play,” Nicol told website liverpool-kop.com of Jones.

“He’s been solid and he’s made some good saves and none of the goals he’s let in have been down to him.

“When Reina was playing, a lot of the goals were down to him. I wouldn’t touch the goal keeping situation at all.”
