Timeline of billionaire Clive Palmer’s troubled relationship with Football Federation Australia:

June 6, 2008 – Palmer signs Gold Coast A-League licence.

August 8, 2009 – Gold Coast make their A-League debut.

October 28, 2009 – Gold Coast cap home crowds at 5000 to save on stadium costs. The FFA say the fledgling club has not done enough to connect with grass roots supporters.

February 5, 2010 – FFA sanction Palmer for accusing them of “corruption” and having an agenda against his club over the suspension of player Steve Pantelidis.

May 5, 2010 – Palmer confirms he will continue to financially back Gold Coast, despite speculation he was set to pull out. He blames FFA for spreading the speculation, in retaliation for him criticising the organisation.

December 2, 2011 – Gold Coast ordered to pay former player Peter Perchtold more than $340,000 in compensation after he was sacked for refusing to have his two-year A-League contract shortened by a season.

February 16, 2012 – Gold Coast suspend coach Miron Bleiberg, over his public comments about the appointment of 17-year-old A-League debutant Mitch Cooper as captain.

February 19 – Palmer publicly labels the A-League a “joke” and soccer a “hopeless game”.

February 20 – Gold Coast sack Bleiberg.

February 23 – Palmer challenges the Olyroos to take on Gold Coast’s under-23 outfit in a $50,000 winner-takes-all clash, while criticising FFA’s selection policy.

February 25 – Gold Coast play in strips bearing the slogan “Freedom of Speech”, despite a FFA directive not to. FFA advise the club they are in breach of their A-League club participation agreement.

February 27 – Gold Coast defy FFA by saying they will continue to wear the slogan for the rest of the season, claiming it is in support of refugees.

February 28 – FFA chairman Frank Lowy says Palmer’s behaviour has been illogical, confused and damaging to the sport and his club a “spectacular failure” in terms of connecting to the community.

February 29 – FFA revoke Gold Coast’s licence. Palmer promises to challenge that decision in court.
