Heerenveen hold on for 4-3 defeat of Roda

Heerenveen twice threw away the lead, coming from behind to edge out Roda JC 4-3 in a thrilling Eredivisie clash on Friday night.

Bas Dost struck the winner in the 70th minute with his second of the night to keep the host’s title hopes alive, lifting them to within four points of leaders PSV Eindhoven.

Dost opened the scoring in the fifth minute and Darryl Janmaat restored the lead after Sanharib Malki’s equaliser.

Malki netted again a minute before the break to make it 2-2 and Davy de Beule put Roda in front early in the second half.

But Gerald Sibon levelled before Dost swung the match finally and decisively back in Heerenveen’s favour.

The win put them fourth, two points behind FC Twente and AZ Alkmaar, but having played a game more than all the sides around them.

Dost gave the home fans early reason to cheer in the bitterly cold conditions when he put them in front.

Roda keeper Pawel Kieszek threw the ball straight to opposition striker Filip Djuricic, who teed up Dost to score in the bottom corner.

The lead lasted just four minutes, though, as Malki headed home after Adil Ramzi’s shot had come back off the bar.

Luciano Narsingh played in Janmaat to restore the hosts’ lead in the 17th minute only for Malki to backheel Roda level for a second time. Mitchell Donald’s cross picked out the striker, who finished in style from four yards.

And the visitors turned the match on its head six minutes into the second half when De Beule headed home Ramzi’s cross from the left at the far post.

But Heerenveen showed they could also come from behind as Sibon powered home a header following Narsingh’s free-kick.

And Dost grabbed the winner with 20 minutes remaining as he again punished a defensive mistake.

Defender Jimmy Hempte presented Viktor Elm’s cross from the left straight to Dost, who saw his first shot saved by the feet of keeper Kieszek but made no mistake with the rebound.

Roda pushed for a leveller without success, with Ramzi going close and Wiljan Pluim forcing a fine save from Brian Vandenbussche in stoppage time.
