West Ham bounced back from their heavy defeat to Mainz at the weekend with a 3-1 friendly victory over Hamburg in Flensburg.
The Hammers were beaten 4-1 by Mainz in the opening match of their tour to Germany – their first loss in pre-season – but enjoyed success against another Bundesliga outfit in the shape of Hamburg, with Matt Jarvis playing a big part in the win.
All four goals were scored in the first half with Alou Diarra and James Tomkins both heading in Jarvis corners to put West Ham 2-0 up inside 30 minutes. Hamburg halved the deficit through Heiko Westermann in the 43rd minute but Sam Allardyce’s men added a third soon after through a Ravel Morrison penalty after Jarvis had been brought down.
It was not such a good night for Aston Villa, though, as they suffered their first pre-season defeat after going down 2-0 to non-league Luton.
Christian Benteke, having last week committed his future to the club, started but he could not fire Villa to victory as goals in either half from Jon Shaw and Jake Howells saw the Conference Premier outfit come out on top at Kenilworth Road
Premier League newcomers Crystal Palace enjoyed a more successful outing as they defeated Gillingham 3-0 at Priestfield in their second-pre-season fixture.
Dean Moxey put Palace ahead in the 21st minute and second-half goals from Stephen Dobbie and trialist Quincy Owusu-Abeyie sealed the win for Ian Holloway’s men.
In Portugal, Newcastle fought back to draw 1-1 against Pacos de Ferreira. Rui Caetano (15) put Pacos ahead but Shola Ameobi (60) salvaged a draw for Newcastle in a match which saw both teams reduced to 10 men, Caetano and Magpies captain Fabricio Coloccini seeing red following a first-half clash.
Also in Portugal, Hull drew 0-0 with Braga.
