Hamburg striker Guerrero gets 8-match ban

SV Hamburg striker Paulo Guerrero has been banned for eight matches following his red card against VfB Stuttgart.

The Peru striker fouled Stuttgart keeper Sven Ulreich after running up behind him near the corner flag in Hamburg’s 4-0 home defeat on Saturday.

Hamburg had appealed against the DFB control panel’s recommendation for a suspension.

The control panel said it was a particularly bad foul by Guerrero who ran up to the keeper before sliding into the back of his legs, some distance from the ball.

The German football federation’s sports court on Tuesday accepted the recommendation for the ban which will stretch over seven weeks.

Guerrero will now miss all but the last two league matches of the season.

It is the second long suspension the player has had to serve after a five-match ban in April 2010 for throwing a plastic bottle back at a spectator.

That incident also cost him some 180,000 euros ($A223,853) in fines.
