Greek soccer strike ends

The Greek players’ union (PSAP) announced on Wednesday it has suspended its two-week strike of the cash-strapped second and third-tier leagues.

Their decision came after the clubs agreed to pay insurance contributions for their players until the end of the season.

The clubs of Football League 1 and 2 did not have enough money to pay for the insurance contributions for their players as they were waiting for funds from a sponsorship deal with state-run betting company OPAP, leading the union to call a strike.

The clubs reportedly received assurances from OPAP that payments would be lifted after being frozen from the end of last season because of the repeated crowd violence which marred Greek soccer.

The OPAP funds heavily affect the income of clubs outside the top flight.
