FC Twente beats Vitesse Arnhem 4-1

Steve McClaren’s FC Twente is back in the Dutch league title race after beating Vitesse Arnhem 4-1 on Sunday.

Twente capitalised on surprise losses by PSV Eindhoven and AZ Alkmaar in the 22nd round to move within three points of the leaders.

PSV still leads on goal difference after losing 3-0 at FC Groningen, as AZ also succumbed to a 3-0 defeat at FC Utrecht.

PSV and Twente have 45 points each. SC Heereveen is two points back in third place, while Twente is next with 42 and a game in hand.

At Groningen’s Euroborg stadium, two goals from Suk Hyun-jun and another from Leandro Bacuna inflicted PSV’s third loss of the season.

Alexander Gerndt scored twice and Edouard Duplan added another for Utrecht, which improved to 11th in the standings.

Twente, which lost to Heracles Almelo in the previous round, made a fine start at Vitesse with midfielder Leroy Fer scoring after six minutes.

Luuk de Jong, Ola John and Nacer Chadli added goals to confirm Twente’s dominance before captain Peter Wisgerhof was sent off for a foul on Wilfried Bony.

Mike Havenaar scored a consolation for Vitesse in the 88th.
