Tim Cahill will miss the opening three matches of the English Premier League next season after Everton’s appeal against his sending off was rejected.
The club appealed Cahill’s red card for grabbing the throat of Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye just moments after the full-time whistle in Everton’s 3-1 win on Sunday.
Everton confirmed on their website they were unsuccessful and that Cahill would serve a three-match ban.
Cabaye, who was cautioned by referee Andre Marriner, issued an apology on Newcastle’s website on the weekend following the incident.
