Euro 2012 official has bonus suspended

Poland’s sports minister has suspended payment of a $180,000 ($A168,887.22) bonus to an official who quit because of problems with a European Championship venue under his supervision.

The bonus was in the contract of Rafal Kapler, who had been in charge of the National Stadium in Warsaw. The new venue was supposed to be open in June 2011 but was delayed until Jan. 29.

The first match due to held there on Feb. 11 was cancelled after police said communication in some areas of the stadium wasn’t possible and they couldn’t guarantee security.

After a public outcry, sports minister Joanna Mucha said late Wednesday that she was holding up Kapler’s payment.

National Stadium is due to host the Euro 2012 opening game on June 8.
