Dutch thwart England fightback

Arjen Robben’s stoppage time goal gave the Netherlands a 3-2 victory over England in a friendly on Wednesday after the hosts had mounted a late recovery in interim coach Stuart Pearce’s first game in charge.

Robben had put the Dutch in front at Wembley in the 57th minute, picking up possession inside his own half, racing forward and slotting the ball past goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Inside two minutes, substitute Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored his 31st goal in 50 internationals, powering a header into the net – and clashing heads with Chris Smalling in the process.

Gary Cahill began England’s fightback in the 85th minute and Ashley Young lifted the ball into the net five minutes later.

But Robben had time to find the net again after being set up by Mark van Bommel.
