Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey are on the US national team squad for next week’s friendly at Italy and could play together for the first time since Jurgen Klinsmann was hired as coach last summer.
The attacking pair were among 21 players selected for Wednesday’s match in Genoa.
Borussia Dortmund forward Terrence Boyd was the only newcomer on the squad announced on Thursday. He had been selected last week for the American under-23 team for a friendly against Mexico, also on February 29.
Goalkeeper Brad Guzan, who made seven starts for Aston Villa while Shay Given was injured in December and January, was selected for the first time since November 2010.
Just four players are from Major League Soccer, which is in its preseason. Six are based in Germany, four in England, two each in Denmark and Scotland, and one apiece in Italy, Mexico and the Netherlands.
