Crystal Palace vs Burnley 2014 EPL Round 4 preview, tips and teams

Burnley travel to the noisy and rowdy Selhurst Park in London this weekend to take on a Crystal Palace side who have looked less than confident so far in the fledgling season. Palace, who started with an opening day loss at the Emirates Stadium against Arsenal welcomed West Ham to Selhurst the following week and were punished 3-1 before recording a 3-3 draw against Newcastle in the third game of the season.

The last time these two sides met, Burnley walked away 1-0 winners courtesy of a Junior Stanislas goal in the 81st minute in January 2013 at Turf Moor in the league championship. The year before that it was a massively different story as the two sides battled it out at Selhurst Park with goals flying in at both ends seemingly for the fun of it. Crystal Palace eventually walked away from the goal-fest 4-3 winners.

This weekend’s meeting however will probably reflect a result more like that of January 2013 as both managers will more than likely happily settle for a point. Burnley have endured a torrid start to the season being soundly beaten 3-1 by Chelsea at home, before Swansea welcomed them to the Liberty Stadium with a 1-0 defeat, while in the third game they managed to snag a draw against Premier league has-beens Manchester United.

Lukas Jutkiewicz will need to lace up his shooting boots this weekend if he is to lift Burnley out of 20th place and win the battle for 19th. Clarets manager Sean Dyche has backed his misfiring strikers to return with a bang sooner rather than later, with goal-shy forwards Danny Ings and Lukas Jutkiewicz unable to find the net so far this season with the only goal for the Clarets coming in the 3-1 defeat to Chelsea at home, courtesy of a Scott Arfield strike.

Dyche however remained upbeat during the press conference earlier in the week, stating: “I think it’s helpful, but I look at their performances, and I think the performances will grow. Danny Ings is still working to find his feet at this level – why wouldn’t he be? He’s a young man going into a real tough level of football. Juke showed really good signs in pre-season, I thought he was excellent for large parts of the last game against Manchester United, Ashley Barnes, Marvin Sordell who is still under the radar, but I still think there’s production to come from him.”

Whatever happens, Selhurst Park is always a tough venue for any visiting team. Renowned as a cauldron of noise, any visiting team will expect to be put through their paces. This weekend’s meeting is likely to be a cagey affair however, and will be more about tactics than it will free-flowing football as both sides look to lift themselves out of an early-season malaise.
