Colombia vs Greece live scores, odds, results – Soccer, Football FIFA World Cup 2014

With the Colombian injury list now including Radamel Falcao, Edwin Valencia and the experienced Luis Perea, Morocco’s coach, Jose Pekerman could be forgiven for feeling a little aggrieved and not a bit worried without such star names to call on for the remainder of a tournament that has only just started. Already chins are starting to wag with many thinking this game might be a bit of a tough ask for the Colombians. The coach however, has remained completely and admirably upbeat in the face of such adversity, citing a “family-like” bond among the team, which has actually resulted in the injured players accompanying the squad, instead of flying off on holiday or staying home with family and friends.

Winger Juan Cuadrado will be expected to make all kinds of mischief against a  Greek back line that have one of the best European defensive records in this tournament (second only to the Ukraine) and it is hoped that he will be able to feed his countrymen, either Teofilo Gutierrez or James Rodriguez who are faced with the mammoth burden of replacing Falcao. Colombia are currently ranked 8th in the world, which is a decent ranking by anyone’s measure, and are set to play on very familiar turf, so they will expect to make a good, positive start.

Greece haven’t had much to shout about since their last Euro win, and in the history of the tournament have suffered the second highest amount of defeats behind minnows El Salvador, and with Colombia boasting the highest possession ratio over all World Cups since 1966, the Greeks can expect a tough game tonight. Colombia are also ahead of the pack on shots on target, so Greek stopper Karnezis will need to be on top of his game. On a brighter note however, the Greek supremo, one Fernando Santos has only lost 3 of his 26 games in charge of the national squad. Also, during qualifying, Greece kept more clean sheets than any other European team.

Entertainment-wise, this game has the potential to be a rather stale affair, with both teams able to defend stoically and sometimes seemingly robotically. Greek captain Giorgos Karagounis is now 37 years old and many are writing him off as “past it”. With a representation of ten different leagues, Colombia has a varied and diverse threat, and having finished second among the South American qualifying teams are considered to be a decidedly dangerous squad. With their youthful, fast and energetic side, Colombia look like favourites against a rather ageing Greek side whose back up ‘keeper would become the oldest player to feature in a World cup, should he get the nod at any time during the tournament, surpassing Cameroon’s Roger Milla at the ripe old age of 42.

Formations are expected to be traditional rather than experimental with Pekerman touted as sticking with his 4-2-2-2, and Greece to deploy a rather standard 4-4-2. This game is expected to be made up of Colombian attack vs. Greek defence and not a lot else, but then both teams are only living up to their equally effective strengths.
