Fernando Torres believes the success of Chelsea’s season must be judged at its conclusion as the striker bids to fire the Blues to Europa League glory.

The 29-year-old wants to add to his four goals in three Europa League games in Thursday night’s semi-final first leg with Basel in Switzerland and appears to be enjoying playing under Rafael Benitez, his former boss at Liverpool.

“It has not been an easy season for anyone but I think we have improved as a team and we are all focused on the same targets,” Torres said.

“We still have one trophy to fight for and to finish in the top four so let’s talk after the season about whether it has been or bad.”

It has been another tumultuous campaign for Chelsea, who replaced Champions League-winning boss Roberto Di Matteo with interim manager Benitez in November.

The Blues had seven trophy opportunities at the start of the season; the Europa League is an unexpected eighth and final chance of glory.

“It’s never easy to change the manager in the middle of the season,” Torres added.

“It happened to us last year and we won the Champions League.

“Hopefully we can win the Europa League this one. It is our priority as well as finishing in the top four (of the English Premier League).”

Torres insists he is committed to Chelsea and hopes to play his part in a young team searching for silverware.

The Spain striker has struggled to reach the heights he reached at Liverpool prior to his STG50 million ($A74.73 million) move to Stamford Bridge in January 2011, prompting suggestions Roman Abramovich is running out of patience with his biggest on-field investment and is prepared to cut his losses.

Yet the World Cup winner appears to be enjoying the Europa League and he envisages a long and successful spell in west London alongside the likes of Juan Mata, Eden Hazard, David Luiz and Oscar.

“I have many things still to give to this club,” Torres said.

“I have three more years contract so I’m expecting to stay at least three years.

“I think we have a great squad and a young squad to build on. I would like to be involved.”

Basel beat Tottenham in the quarter-finals and head coach Murat Yakin is eyeing another high-profile scalp.

Yakin, who took charge in October with Basel struggling, said: “I’m not a dreamer. I’m very realistic. The team grew in this competition, showed great performances, at home especially.

“We need one great game and maybe one okay game to maybe even make it to the final.”
