The Estadio Castelao will come alive this evening as two of the tournament’s heavyweight contenders go head to head for the fourth time in the World Cup. South American teams are renowned for bringing skill, tactical awareness and style to a game and tonight’s showpiece match should be no exception. If Real and Barca are the galacticos of domestic football, then Brazil and Mexico are their international counterparts. Some of the world’s biggest names will parade their skills this evening, with both sides likely to go for the throat from the first whistle.
Brazil won their first game against Croatia, cruising to an easy 3-1 victory over their Balkan opposition. Neymar netted twice, with Oscar bagging one in injury time. Marcelo scored what was to be a consolation goal in the 11th minute. Mexico, for their part, also won their first game, beating Cameroon by a less commanding 1-0, Oribe Peralta netting the winner in the 61st minute. Both teams sit top of the group, but Brazil occupy pole position thanks to their superior goal difference. Should the Selecao triumph this evening, it is assumed by most that they will already have done enough to qualify, however Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari will not take it so lightly.
With a midfield trio of Hulk, Neymar and Oscar all given license to go and “have fun” and with Fred likely to start up front, the Mexicans will have to call on all their combined experience to keep them out. Unfortunately for Mexico, they haven’t scored against Brazil in the last four meetings, with the Selecao having netted against them a combined eleven times. However, Brazil will keep a wary eye on the combined talents of Oribe Peralta and Geovanni dos Santos, who do pose a real, tangible threat up front for Mexico; especially with the ever-dangerous trio of Hererra, Vazquez and Guardardo behind them. Hererra loves to get forward and attack the opposition left flank so Hulk and Marcelo will need to be on their toes.
Vazquez is an old hand at bossing his midfield and will be looking to use quick passes and intelligent balls through the centre channels to feed his attackers as they try to run in behind Luiz and Silva. Neymar will be one to watch tonight, having scored 33 goals in just 50 appearances for Brazil, with an even more astonishing six in his last four games. Brazil are the strongest team at the tournament statistically, enjoying a run a of thirty eight games unbeaten, so on paper at least, they are the favourites for tonight’s game. Mexico are never an easy proposition however, being renowned for tight defending and good organisation.
Expect tonight’s showpiece game to be one of the highlight of the tournament, with Mexico expected to counter quickly from Brazil’s fluid forays forward. On paper it looks like a goal fest, however with both teams sporting top defences, it may be that the best of the action takes place in the middle of the park, with perhaps only one or two goals separating the winners fromm the losers.
