Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich – Champions League 2013 Grand Final preview and tips

All eyes are on Wembley Stadium this weekend, for the biggest game of club soccer in the world. The Champions League Grand Final kicks off on Sunday morning at 4.15AM AEST, with Bayern Munich battling it out with Borussia Dortmund in an all-German affair.

The two Bundersliga giants overcame the best in Europe to make it this far, and neither team will want to go home empty handed. While Bayern go into this match as favourites, Dortmund managed to emerge from the ‘group of death’ in top position and will prove tough opponents.

In the knockout stages, Dortmund defeated Shakhtar Donetsk (5-2 agg), Malaga (3-2 agg), and Real Madrid (4-3 agg). Their close victory against Madrid proved their ability to beat top-class clubs, with Jose Mourinho’s team unable to break down the Dortmund defence when it mattered. Bayern also come into this final after overcoming tough competition, beating Arsenal (3-3 agg), Juventus (4-0 agg), and Barcelona (7-0 agg).

Their impressive victory over Barcelona will have given Bayern a lot of confidence, with the German champions enjoying the most dominant win over the Spanish champions in recent history. If Bayern can win the Champions League, it will be a treble for 2013, having already taken out the Bundersliga and German Cup.

There are a number of exciting match-ups to watch out for during the game, starting with the coaches and going all the way through the team sheet. Jupp Heynckes and Jurgen Klopp are two of the most in-demand coaches in Europe at the moment, with Heynckes about to leave Munich and keen to take every available trophy with him. A win here will see him snatch the treble, with Dortmund’s Klopp needing victory here to avoid an empty-handed 2013.

The battle of the midfield will be very important in this game, with Dortmund players Reus, Blaszczykowski, Bender, and Gundogan fighting it out against the likes of Martinez, Ribery, Mueller, Robben, and Schweinsteiger. Grosskreutz is likely to replace the injured Gotze for Dortmund, with the battle between Lewandowski and Bayern’s defence also key.

Lewandoski is extremely important for Dortmund in this game, after scoring a massive 31 percent of all Dortmund’s Bundersliga goals this season and 44 percent of all their Champions League goals. If Bayern can manage to shut down the big man, Dortmund’s chances will be severely reduced.

After coming second to Bayern in the domestic competition, Dortmund will be more than keen to make amends. However, the depth of their opponents is very impressive to say the least, with Bayern simply having more options on the table when it comes to attack, and more ability to penetrate and score goals.

While the entire Bayern side will be hungry for a win, no-one will want this more than Thomas Mueller who has now lost two different Champions League Grand Finals for different teams. After losing with Inter Milan three years ago and then with Chelsea last season, the 23-year old forward will be hoping it’s third time lucky this weekend.

It’s very hard to go past the depth and class of Bayern Munich in this match, although with so much to fight for, Dortmund will give it everything they’ve got. Bayern are likely to dominate the midfield, and the Dortmund defence will not be able to rest for even a second. However, if Dortmund remain vigilant in defence and take advantage of their counter-attacking opportunities, this could be a very interesting match.
