Bahrain falls short in 2014 WCup qualifier

Bahrain ran over hapless Indonesia 10-0 on Wednesday but it was not enough for the Gulf nation to advance into the next round of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup.

Bahrain needed Qatar to lose to have a chance of advancing, but it drew 2-2 with Iran, allowing both teams to advance in Group D.

Midfielder Sayed Dhiya scored four goals and striker Mohamed Tayeb added a hat trick for Bahrain.

The victory will do little to make up for being eliminated from the 2014 World Cup campaign so early. The tiny Gulf nation had established itself as a regional football power after it nearly qualified for the 2010 World Cup. It was beaten by New Zealand in an intercontinental playoff.

Coached by former England under-21 and Leicester manager Peter Taylor, the team had struggled to score until Wednesday’s game.
