Aguero repays City signing – with interest

It cost Manchester City STG38 million to sign Sergio Aguero from Atletico Madrid. On Sunday, he paid them back and promised more. The Argentina forward, the son-in-law of World Cup winning captain Diego Maradona, scored the winning goal in injury time as City beat Queens Park Rangers 3-2 to win the English league title for the first time since 1968. The last of his 30 goals in all competitions was the most important as Aguero took one touch in the area to create space and then fired in the winner. UK newspaper The Daily Mirror posted the headline: Foot of God, an homage to Maradona’s Hand of God hand-ball moment when Argentina beat England in the 1986 World Cup. And City manager Roberto Mancini said he would not have wished the chance to fall to any other player. “It was right that Sergio should score the goal,” Mancini said. “This is an incredible moment. We wanted this title and we deserve to win this title. This is for all our supporters, the club, the chairman and the owner. This is the perfect finale for a crazy season.” The softly-spoken Aguero took his chance with the coolness that helped him score 29 other goals in all competitions in his first season. “The ball fell at my feet and my only thought was to hit the target,” he said. “Thankfully it went in. For sure it was the most important goal of my career. “To score in the last minute to win the title? I’m not sure that is ever going to happen again.” Aguero’s City and Argentina team-mate Pablo Zabaleta, who scored the first goal against QPR, said the importance of the forward could not be overstated. “He makes all the difference,” Zabaleta said. “He is an unbelievable player and always appears in the best moments.” Aguero was mobbed by City fans at the final whistle and said he would do everything he could to bring more success in future years. “During the invasion, loads of fans came over,” The Sun reported him as saying. “They grabbed me and kissed me. But the only thing I understood was, ‘I love you’. That made me so happy. “Since I arrived at City, everyone has treated me really well. I repaid them with a goal to win the title and make history.
