Wallaby Douglas’s mother has stroke

The mother of Wallabies second-rower Kane Douglas is in an induced coma in a London hospital after suffering a stroke on a flight to Europe to see her son play for Australia.

Trish Douglas was travelling with husband Chris and had the stroke near the end of her flight and was taken off the plane at Heathrow on Friday and rushed to hospital where her condition on Sunday in London was said to be improving.

Douglas caught an early train to London on Sunday to be with his mother while his two brothers Luke and Jake have both flown to England.

The incident happened on the eve of the Wallabies’ 33-6 loss to France in Paris on Saturday (Sunday AEDT).

Douglas played in the match but only after being convinced by one of his brothers and his father.

Wallabies coach Robbie Deans praised Douglas for his effort given what he and his family are going through.

“Kane did very well under a difficult circumstance,” Deans said.

“He had that going on in the back of his mind but he would have caught up with her by now which is good.

“She had an event in flying over, on the last hour of the flight she had an event and went to hospital … induced coma but last report everything was stable.”

It is not known yet if Douglas will be available for the Wallabies’ clash with England at Twickenham on Saturday.
