Super Rugby video refs need help: Blues

Blues coach Sir John Kirwan says the NRL’s move to tweak their video refereeing procedure this season has been a positive one and it’s something Super Rugby could learn from.

NRL referees now have to make a decision before going up to the two video refs – league’s equivalent of rugby’s television match official (TMO) – to confirm whether it should stand.

“I think there’s some things we could learn from rugby league,” Kirwan told journalists on Thursday.

“When they go to the TMO, the refs have already made a decision, which I think is a real positive.”

Kirwan’s comment comes after Blues technical adviser Sir Graham Henry this week blasted the officiating in his team’s 23-3 defeat to the Crusaders last weekend.

Among the complaints from the World Cup-winning former All Blacks coach was that TMO Keith Brown got two crucial decisions wrong.

Kirwan, who has been a supporter of the trial giving the TMO wider powers, took a softer line when asked about Henry’s attack.

He said he had already passed on his concerns to SANZAR referees boss Lyndon Bray through the normal channels.

“We get frustrated, but there are just different ways to communicate it,” he said.

“So we’ve cut the videos and Lyndon has had a look at them and we’ve moved on now.”
