The Stormers overcame a typically robust performance from the Southern Kings to secure a 19-11 victory in a sodden Super Rugby encounter at Newlands on Saturday.
With periodic downpours sweeping across the ground, a scrappy game was inevitable, but the home team’s greater class slowly came through to allow a comfortable win.
The Stormers led by a slim 6-3 at halftime after committing errors in the opening period, but two penalties and a converted try from Deon Fourie put them well out in front before Wimpie van der Walt grabbed a consolation score for the Kings.
The result left the Kings with little chance of avoiding last place in the South African conference.
