SBW cops four-week ban for shoulder charge

Sonny Bill Williams will miss the All Blacks’ third and deciding Test against the British and Irish Lions after copping a four-week ban for his shoulder charge.

The high-profile midfield back became the first All Black to be sent off in a Test for 50 years when shown a red card early in the 24-21 loss to the Lions in Wellington on Saturday.

A three-man judiciary deemed the action also warranted a suspension which will rule him out of the Blues’ final Super Rugby match of the season against the Sunwolves in Tokyo on July 15.

The All Blacks clearly anticipated a suspension, announcing earlier on Sunday that Highlanders Malakai Fekitoa would join them ahead of the third Test at Eden Park on Saturday.

Williams was sent for an early shower in the 25th minute after a crunching shoulder charge that struck Lions winger Anthony Watson flush in the face.

The last All Black to be sent off was Colin Meads, against Scotland in 1967.
