Australian Super Rugby rookie of the year Joseph Tomane is looking for miracles to expedite his return from a serious ankle injury to make Australia’s Spring tour.
A year after playing for lower-tier rugby league side Ipswich, Tomane capped a successful first season back in the 15-a-side code by being recognised at the Super Rugby awards on Thursday.
The former Australian Schoolboys representative spent four seasons in rugby league with Melbourne and Gold Coast and wasn’t looking any further than Canberra club rugby this year.
But he established himself as a regular in the new-look Brumbies side, scoring four tries, and playing one Test against Scotland.
Tomane initially injured his ankle in June and aggravated it in the Brumbies’ final round Super match earlier this month and is expected to be out for some time.
“Four months I think is the prognosis, but I think I can come back earlier,” Tomane said.
“I came back early from the first injury and I (thought I) was fine, but I wasn’t.
“I’m usually a quick healer, so I’m hoping for a few miracles.”
Tomane felt he was still a chance of making Australia’s tour later in the year.
“I don’t know if it’s an option for them (the selectors) but I’d definitely love to be picked for that tour,” Tomane said.
“I think they leave right on time from when I’m completely healed and back fully fit, but right now I’m not really thinking about the Spring tour.
“I’m thinking about the 2013 season and doing what I can to cement my spot on the wing for the Brumbies again.”
