It’s been seen in the NRL and the AFL, now an Indigenous Australian-inspired jersey will be worn for the first time in Super Rugby.
The Queensland Rugby Union has initiated its own indigenous round and the Reds will wear a unique jersey in Friday night’s must-win match against the Highlanders.
Unveiled on Monday by artist Stephen Hogarth, the jerseys will also be individually signed and auctioned after the match to raise funds for the Reds’ indigenous program.
Hogarth’s artwork, titled `You Belong’, represents community, the sharing of knowledge and the development of young leaders.
Queensland centre Anthony Faingaa was quick to highlight the parallels between the artwork’s message and the Reds.
“(With) the jumper meaning knowledge, young leaders … (it) encapsulates our team,” he said.
Both Anthony and twin brother Saia’s pride in wearing their side’s indigenous jersey is a personal one, with their Aboriginal heritage being traced through their mother Cindy, a part of the stolen generation.
“It’s obviously a great honour for myself, being indigenous, to be part of this,” hooker Saia said.
“I’m very proud to be wearing this jersey and to have it on NAIDOC week is a great occasion.”
Anthony echoed his brother’s sentiments.
“I think it’s fantastic, and to wear the jumper is a privilege,” he said.
