Melbourne Rebels coach Damien Hill believes emerging lock Hugh Pyle deserves a call-up to the Wallabies squad to face the Lions next month.
The two metre tall 24-year-old has been a linchpin for the Rebels this Super Rugby season; integral in their recent run of success.
He will get a huge test of his credentials when he lines up against Queensland’s Test duo James Horwill and Rob Simmons at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.
Pyle has taken on board feedback last year from Wallabies coach Robbie Deans that he improve his involvement in the contact area.
As well as improving his set-piece work, Pyle has shown some great athleticism and handling skills to be amongst the Rebels’ leading try-scorers, including a double against defending premiers the Chiefs.
“Definitely,” said Hill, when asked if Pyle could be a bolter for the series.
“He’s played nearly every minute of every game for us and he’s a definite leader.
“He’s getting good go-forward himself and he’s stopping good go-forward so I definitely think he’s in contention for the Wallabies.”
Hill said he’d spoken to Deans about Pyle and hoped selectors would consider him among the extra six players to be added on June 11.
“He’s definitely ready.”
