Rebel Beale won’t front media

The Melbourne Rebels have granted wayward Wallabies star Kurtley Beale’s request not to front a media conference ahead of his return from disciplinary suspension to Super Rugby.

Beale was scheduled to address the media at the Rebels’ captain’s run on Thursday ahead of their home clash with defending champions the Chiefs on Friday, where Beale is set to make his comeback via the bench.

However, the Rebels issued a statement on Thursday morning cancelling his appearance at his asking.

Beale has missed six matches and has been undergoing counselling for alcohol-related issues since being sent home from the Rebels South Africa tour for punching captain Gareth Delve and winger Cooper Vuna.

“Although this was initially the club’s intention to (hold the media conference), we fully support Kurtley’s request and pledge that he will present to the media in the very near future,” the statement said.

“Throughout Beale’s off-field program, the club has ensured that each decision has and will continue to be in the best interest of the club and Kurtley.

“In this instance, Kurtley’s welfare is paramount and the club fully respects his decision.”
