Argentine legend Felipe Contepomi is eyeing the scalp of one of rugby’s “big boys”, Australia, to finish his career on a high.
The veteran centre will become the most-capped Puma in history with 87 appearances when he plays against the Wallabies in their Rugby Championship clash at Estadio Gigante de Arroyito stadium in Rosario on Saturday (Sunday AEST).
Contepomi, who is tipped to hang up his boots after the match, says Argentina is desperate to get some more wins and become a powerhouse nation.
He felt the Wallabies, who have been under par throughout the four-nation series, were still strong.
“People or press might say Australia is not at their best moment but, for us, it’s still Australia and for us being part of this tournament, it’s to be invited by the big boys and hopefully we will become some day a big boy and play and get some results,” the 36-year-old said.
Argentina were edged by Australia 14-13 in their earlier meeting in Perth, which was the Wallabies’ sole victory, but Contepomi said near enough wasn’t good enough.
The biggest margin separating the teams during the two-year Rugby Championship was last year’s 25-19 victory by the Wallabies in Rosario.
“We have so many times been close to Australia, to South Africa, to New Zealand and it’s not enough now.
“We need to learn from those experiences.
“Hopefully, sooner rather than later, we’ll start getting some positive results because, nowadays, society – they just want results.”
Last week in Mendoza, the Pumas led the All Blacks early in the second half before the world champions ran away with the match.
Contepomi said his side needed to go the distance.
“I think we have some very good 50 minutes but rugby is about 80 minutes.
“I think we are going solid the way we are going and hopefully the results will come but for us to get a result to perform through 80 minutes.”
Argentina suffered a setback losing heavy-hitting prop Juan Figallo with a back/neck injury.
The tighthead was one of the Pumas’ standouts against New Zealand, proving a constant menace to the All Black scrum.
Figallo has been replaced in the run-on side by Juan Pablo Orlandi with under-20s player Matias Diaz coming onto the bench.
“Any player you have in your starting 15 and you lose it’s a big blow especially for us that we don’t have a lot of depth like other teams,” Contepomi said.
“We are confident that Juan Pablo Orlandi will do a great job.”
