NSW Waratahs confirmed the appointment of Melbourne Rebels and Wallabies halfback Nick Phipps on a two-year deal starting in the 2014 Super Rugby season.
The Waratahs announced the deal on Saturday, as did the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) with the 24-year-old Phipps extending his contract with the Wallabies.
Phipps admits the prospect of playing in a second Rugby World Cup in 2015 was too good to knock back.
“It’s definitely in the back of my mind,” Phipps said in a ARU statement of the next World Cup to be played in England.
“Obviously there is a lot that can happen between now and then but I’m enjoying my Rugby at the moment, and enjoying playing in Australia.”
Phipps made his Test debut against Samoa in 2011 and has since earned 12 caps, including starting in eight of the Wallabies’ past nine matches in the abscence of star No.9 Will Genia.
Waratahs coach Michael Cheika believes Phipps is well-suited to his team.
“Nick is a good threatening, attacking player,” Cheika said in a statement released by the Waratahs.
“He’s good all round, in attack, in defence and with his kicking game; he’s a quality player and I think that he’s still got a lot of potential to fulfil. That makes for very good competition in the No.9 position.”
