NZ women into World Cup sevens semis

Tournament top-scorer Portia Woodman added two more tries to her tally as New Zealand beat England 24-7 to reach the semi-finals of the women’s rugby sevens World Cup in Moscow.

Woodman scored the first and the last of her team’s four tries to take her personal haul to eight from four matches.

New Zealand, who came into the tournament as the inaugural world series champions, dominated the early exchanges.

They went out to a 12-0 lead after Sarah Goss dotted down, but England replied just before halftime with a runaway try to Heather Fisher.

New Zealand then produced some strong defence to keep their opponents out in the second spell, while ticking their own score over with further tries to Kelly Brazier and Woodman.

In the semi-finals, they will face the United States, who downed Ireland 14-5.
