NZ thump Scotland at Hong Kong sevens

New Zealand disposed of Scotland 33-0 as the top seeds notched effortless wins on the first day of the world series sevens tournament in Hong Kong.

The New Zealand side scored three tries in the second half to overwhelm the Scots ahead of further pool games against the United States and Samoa on Saturday.

The US beat Samoa 26-12 in their opening game.

Playmaker Gillies Kaka made a welcome return from injury for New Zealand and scored their opening try.

Kaka missed the final day of last week’s tournament in Japan with a leg injury, watching on as his side placed a disappointing fourth.

Series leaders South Africa outclassed France 31-7 while Hong Kong defending champions Fiji routed Wales 42-7.

Other opening winners were England, Kenya, Australia and Canada.

South Africa (116) lead the series from series defending champions New Zealand (114) and Fiji (95).
