New Zealand will play England in the Sydney rugby sevens men’s semi-final after edging Olympic champions Fiji 24-21 in the quarter-finals.
The match was a repeat of last week’s Wellington sevens quarter-final, won 26-10 by Rio gold medallists Fiji, in everything except the final scoreline.
Fiji took a 14-12 lead into halftime courtesy of converted tries from Sevulani Mocenacagi and Kailione Nasoko, New Zealand matching them through Iopu Iopu and Regan Ware.
Sherwin Stowers kickstarted the second spell with a well-taken try, but was yellow-carded two minutes later, allowing Fiji to regain the lead soon after when Nasoko crossed for his second.
But a length-of-the-field try to Sione Molia deep into extra time gave the Kiwis the win.
