Jane gets another shot for NZ third Test

The All Blacks plan to persist with an out-of-form Cory Jane for the third Test against England in Hamilton and Kieran Read remains a prospect to return.

The star of the 28-27 second Test win on Saturday, Ben Smith, will play fullback again after coach Steve Hansen revealed regular No.15 Israel Dagg needs more time to recover from a knee complaint.

With no other realistic candidate to play on the right wing, Jane will get another shot despite a mistake-ridden evening in Dunedin.

The 31-year-old struggled with his hands, committing seven turnovers, including six in the first half.

Coach Steve Hansen was in a forgiving mood.

“Cory got himself into the game in the second half and mentally he overcame the burden of making those early mistakes,” Hansen said.

“Hopefully he comes out with a bit of confidence and we see him go up another level next week.”

Uncapped Highlanders winger Patrick Osborne joined the squad this week as cover and will travel to Hamilton but is unlikely to play.

Dagg needs further rest to his patella tendon niggle which was impacting on his ability to jump and to kick, Hansen said.

World class No.8 Read has played one game in the last two months, mainly because of ongoing concussion symptoms.

He trained with the squad but wasn’t picked for the second Test, with Hansen citing match fitness concerns.

“Obviously there’s a little bit of anxiety floating about because he’s been concussed,” Hansen said.

“But the more he gets into the training, the more he’ll get comfortable and then we’ll make a decision.”

Meanwhile, Hansen said just one member of his squad will be released to play for the Crusaders in their tour match against the English.

Back-up openside flanker Matt Todd will play 40 minutes of the game in Christchurch on Tuesday.
