I’ve taken another step: Lealiifano

Christian Lealiifano says his journey to full health remains on-going after making his comeback to rugby with the Brumbies 10 months after being diagnosed with leukaemia.

Messages of admiration have poured in for the star five-eighth, who came on just after 50 minutes of the Brumbies’ exhibition match against the Asia-Pacific Dragons on Thursday night in Singapore.

“My journey is very much an ongoing process and I am mindful of taking each day as it comes,” Lealiifano said in a statement.

“It was fantastic to get back onto the field and play some rugby after such a long lay-off.

“This is another step in the recovery process and it felt good to be on the field and fully involved again.

“I am concentrating totally on my recovery and my rugby at the moment and my focus is on helping the team and trying to get back to full health and my best as a rugby player.”

Seven months ago, Lealiifano received a bone marrow transplant as part of his treatment.

It didn’t take long during Thursday’s match for Lealiifano, who has 19 Wallabies caps, to return to the scoresheet as he knocked over five conversions in the ACT-based franchise’s 61-14 victory.

His return will spark hopes he can figure in the Brumbies’ finals campaign or their two remaining Super Rugby fixtures.

It has already inspired teammates, with scrumhalf Tomas Cubelli declaring “superheroes exist” on social media.

With Cubelli also making his comeback from a pre-season knee injury, Brumbies prop Scott Sio paid tribute.

“Unreal having (Lealiifano and Cubelli) back in the Brumbies colours tonight in Singapore. Proud to be a part of both their journeys through life. Can’t wait to take the field with you both again,” Sio posted to Instagram.

The Brumbies will host a sudden-death final on July 21 after sealing the Australian conference before the June Test break.

Meanwhile, former Brumbies coach Laurie Fisher will re-join the club next year as an assistant to Dan McKellar, as the post-Stephen Larkham era begins to take shape.

Larkham will leave at the end of the season to take up a full-time assistant role at the Wallabies, with forwards coach McKellar his successor.

Fisher, who led the Brumbies between 2005 and 2008 as well as co-coaching the club with Larkham in 2014, finished a three-year stint with Gloucester earlier in the season.
