Is Folau next Wallabies fullback?

The thought of donning Australia’s No.15 guernsey for the second Test against the British and Irish Lions has not occurred to code hopper Israel Folau.

Then again, Folau is still getting his head around the fact he is wearing the Wallabies colours in the first place.

Folau capped one of the great debuts with a two-try celebration from the wing, however, it was not enough to stop the Lions holding for a 23-21 victory at a packed Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.

He stood tall but must have felt like the last man standing by fulltime with five backline players injured ahead of the second Test in Melbourne on June 29.

Despite setting up what looked like an epic rivalry with Lions winger George North, Folau is suddenly in the frame for the fullback job after colliding with incumbent No.15 Berrick Barnes (jaw) during the tight loss.

“We will consider everything. I can assure you he will have a jersey on,” Wallabies coach Robbie Deans said of Folau’s fullback prospects.

Barnes was added to an injury list comprising debutant centre Christian Lealiifano (concussion), Pat McCabe (neck), Adam Ashley-Cooper (shoulder) and winger Digby Ioane (shoulder-elbow).

Folau – Australia’s 47th dual international – had played all but one of his 14 previous rugby games for NSW Waratahs at fullback.

Not that he was making any assumptions after an international debut he rated more intense than the five State of Origin games he played for Queensland in his league years.

“It’s on another level. It was something I had never experienced before,” the former Greater Western Sydney AFL player said.

Asked about filling in as fullback, Folau said: “I am not sure. Hopefully Berrick will be alright.

“Plus Kurtley (Beale) is there too. It’s up to Robbie and the coaching staff really.

“Personally I am just stoked about being in the team. Hopefully I can help get them a win in Melbourne.”

Folau took just 13 minutes to score and had a double by the 35th, equalling the record for most tries by a Wallaby in a Lions Test and joining the likes of Daniel Herbert and Joe Roff (2001 series).

He also denied North a first-half try in the left corner.

“He can do crazy things,” Wallabies five-eighth James O’Connor said.

“Hopefully we can give him some more ball (in the second Test).”

Halfback Will Genia added: “He’s an absolute freak.

“We talked him up all week and he came out and proved it. He’s a big game player, he’s used to playing on the big stage and he delivered.

“We are lucky he is on our side.”
